The market in the historic town centre
Every Saturday morning from 8.00-13.00 the old part of the town becomes a popular meeting place for the locals and an attraction for visitors. The local produce and crafts displayed on the numerous stalls bring a touch of colour to the historic town center. The market was revived some years ago by local trades people who wanted to see the return of a tradition (of medieval origin), which provides the local population with an opportunity to meet friends and mix with outsiders in a lighthearted and convivial atmosphere. All year round the market offers a great variety of good quality, fresh and beautifully presented fruits and vegetables at a reasonable price. Delicious local cheeses from Isone and Valle di Muggio, or from Leventina, Vallemaggia and Valle di Blenio can be bought on the market and, to accompany them, a vast choice of freshly baked white, brown and rye breads. There are also the usual wares that one sees on any good market: household articles and garden and leisure goods. On market day the restaurants in the area offer a wide range of local dishes, such as risotto, polenta minestrone or game for those who might like to enjoy a modestly priced meal and taste some of the excellent regional wines, before looking round the town; a delightful way to spend a Saturday in Bellinzona.
