The museum
The museum was opened in 1974 and is located in the tower and the former residential quarters of the Castello di Montebello. The lay-out of the museum is very modern and it is divided into two sections: history and archaeology. In the former there are several 15th c. capitals found in the Bellinzona area, some of which are decorated with crests, and a rare 13th c. baptismal font . In additional there are drawings, sketches and engravings by well-known local and foreign artists. This section also houses a collection of ceremonial and military arms of considerable historical and artistic importance. In the archaeology section, many artefacts dating from 1400-1500 B.C. are displayed in chronological order. There are also ceramics, glassware, funeral urns, ornamental objects and jewellery in iron and bronze, which were all unearthed at different sites in the Canton during numerous excavations. Both the expert and the casual visitor will find a visit to the museum worthwhile and it may be of particular interest to school parties
